The Habit is a unique building in that it was home to the Secular Sisters of Schoonstadt (Catholic nuns) before being converted into a beautiful guest house. The serenity of The Habit, possibly due to all the prayers said here over a 60 year period, is added to by the high pressed ceilings, wooden floors and beds draped in crisp white linen.
Large verandahs and louvred shutters have a cooling effect in the long summer days. The dining area opens onto a lovely deck, and on beautiful moonlit evenings there is nothing nicer than sitting outside and dining under the starry sky. In winter, the cosy lounge is a great place to relax with a heart-warming glass of Sherry, the tinkling piano, and the mouth-watering aromas of a delicious dinner wafting from the kitchen. An eye catching feature outdoors is a large fresh water swimmingpool set in the centre of an attractive country garden, abounding with the twitter of birds.
The owners Bridget & Judy are your friendly hosts, and the team is on hand to make your stay as happy as possible. There is a great deal to see and do in the area and they will only be too happy to direct you.
For those who wish to do their own thing or like travelling with their animals, the two self catering garden cottages, Oak and Jacaranda, are ideal. Each has its own secure private garden if you do decide to bring “Boomer” on holiday! We have a wonderful resident dog, a Rhodesian ridgeback called “Chilli”, who has learnt to open his home to other dogs, especially the guide dogs that come to stay.
The guest house is centrally situated in the “old town” which has more gabled buildings than any other town in South Africa, and every gable is different. It is within easy walking distance to restaurants, most of the schools and other places of interest. In fact nothing is very much more than 5 to 10 minutes away.
